Honouring the past and bringing the community together at Bower House, Henley-in-Arden.
There is something rather special about places that carry a story, particularly when that story connects generations of people within a local community.
Recently, a moving gathering took place at Arden Lawn in Henley-in-Arden, where guests came together to remember former pupils of Arden House School who lost their lives serving their country during the First and Second World Wars.
The occasion centred around a remarkable piece of local history: the Arden House School War Memorial, a Grade II listed sundial standing in the grounds of Arden Lawn, just across from Bower House.
A Memorial with a Story to Tell
Unlike the traditional crosses and stone monuments often associated with remembrance, the Arden House School memorial takes the form of a sundial.
It was originally erected following the First World War by the "Parents, Old Boys and Friends of the School" to honour 26 former pupils who lost their lives during the conflict.
Following the Second World War, a further plaque was added in memory of nine former pupils who died between 1939 and 1945.
Today, the memorial stands as a lasting tribute to 35 young men whose lives were lost, and to the generations who have continued to remember them.
The memorial has been recognised by Historic England for its architectural and historic significance, as well as its important connection to the local community.
From School Days to a New Chapter
The memorial also provides a fascinating connection to the history of Arden Lawn itself.
The site was once home to Arden House School, a place where generations of young people studied, made friendships and prepared for their futures.
Today, the former school building has been given a new lease of life as The Manor at Arden Lawn, providing 14 beautifully appointed apartments.
Although the buildings and their purpose have changed over the years, the memorial remains an important reminder of the site's past.
It is a lovely example of how historic places can evolve while retaining the stories and memories that make them so special.
A Warm Welcome at Bower House
Following the gathering at the memorial, everyone was invited across to Bower House for refreshments and an opportunity to spend time together.
And, of course, Faye Willock was ready and waiting with the kettle on, plenty of tea and biscuits, and a warm welcome for everyone!
It was a lovely way to round off the morning, with guests enjoying conversation, sharing memories and appreciating the sense of community that makes Henley-in-Arden such a special place.
At Bower House, we believe that creating a welcoming environment is about much more than beautiful surroundings. It is about people, friendships and those small moments that bring everyone together.
Remembering the Past, Celebrating Community
The morning was a wonderful reminder that remembrance is not only about looking back. It is also about bringing people together in the present and ensuring that important stories continue to be told.
We were delighted to welcome everyone to Bower House and to play a small part in such a meaningful occasion.
Our thanks to everyone who attended, and to those who continue to preserve the history and heritage of Arden Lawn.
Lest we forget.
